Al voor de Romeinse overheersing woonden er Joden in het zuiden van Spanje. In 1013 wordt door de Moren het Koninkrijk Granada gevestigd, dat – onder diverse omstandigheden – tot 1502 stand weet te houden. Hoewel de Islam staatsgodsdienst is, kunnen de Joden in betrekkelijke vrijheid leven. Christenen worden gedoogd. Door de muzikale Joden wordt de islamitische cultuur toegankelijk voor muziek. Uiteindelijk wordt het Koninkrijk Granada door de Christelijke cultuur overvleugeld. 1000 jaar later voert Jordi Savall een prachtig programma in het Alahambra uit, waarbij de muziek uit de drie culturen moeiteloos in elkaar overgaan. Naast een schitterend boek, prachtige muziek uit de periode 1013-1502 zoals die in het zuiden van Andalusië klonk.

Jordi Savall examines 500 years of history in this portrait of a city that symbolises like no other the fruitful, and at the same time, conflictual encounter of the three monotheistic religions. The succession of the Zirid, Almoravid, Almohad and Nasrid dynasties, their relationship with the neighbouring Christian kingdoms and the often precarious situation of the Jews (the first inhabitants of this area) are reflected in this wide musical fresco, in which each culture displays its most advanced refinement.
