TRIFONOV, DANIIL

Aan de hand van het tweede en vierde pianoconcert staat Daniil Trifonov stil bij het bewogen leven van deze Russische componist en pianist. De reis begint in de zomer van 1890 waarin de jonge Rachmaninov zijn vakantie besteed aan studie bij zijn neef Alexander Siloti. Rachmaninov raakt onder de indruk van de gezusters Skalon, uiteindelijk blijken de dames onbereikbaar te zijn. Wel weet Rachmaninov een paar prachtige vroege werken te schrijven. Na de depressie als gevolg van de geflopte eerste symfonie, grijpt Rachmaninov terug op de Romance die hij in 1890 schreef. Het resultaat is één van de mooiste pianoconcerten van de vorige eeuw. Ruim twee decennia later schrijft Rachmaninov zijn vierde pianoconcert aan de andere kant van de oceaan. Dit werk is doorspekt met jazzy items. Daniil Trifonov weet deze verschillende werken op een fantastische wijze uit de voeren. Het vierde pianoconcert is een prachtige live registratie waarin Daniil Trifonov en de Philadelphia Orchestra onder leiden van Yannick Nézet-Séguin tot een prachtige finale komt.

These voluminous works are contrasted with a taste of Rachmaninov the master miniaturist, with solo piano transcriptions of Bach's Partita in E Major.
