De woeste haardos die de cover van de ultieme livedubbelaar Hot August Night uit 1972 siert, heeft Neil Diamond allang niet meer, maar een over-the-top showman is hij nog steeds. Dat bewijst hij op Hot August Night III dat net als het oorspronkelijke album (nr II verscheen in 1987) werd opgenomen in The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Waar hij het eerste decennium van deze eeuw onder leiding van Rick Rubin een meer sobere comeback maakte, gingen in augustus 2012 alle remmen weer los. Met hulp van maar liefst veertien muzikanten en een volledig orkest brengt de energiek klinkende Diamond ruim dertig nummers, waarbij vrijwel al zijn klassiekers voorbijkomen. Van Solitary Man tot Sweet Caroline en van I Am... I Said tot en met het archetypische Beautiful Noise. De meeste indruk maakt echter het emotionele introductie van America, dat Diamond opdraagt aan zijn oma die lang geleden vanuit Oekraïne, via Rotterdam, naar de Verenigde Staten emigreerde. Een beslissing waar hij, haar kleinzoon, alles aan te danken heeft.
