Uit de in totaal 420 Cantigas de Santa Maria koos Jordi Savall er 14. Met de twee ensembles waarbij hij aan de wieg stond maakte hij in 1993 een opname waarvan nu een heruitgave is uitgekomen. Aan de oorspronkelijk opname is 1 lied (opname uit 2008) toegevoegd. De cantigas ontstonden in de 13e eeuw aan het Spaanse hof van Alfonso X el Sabio. Hij stimuleerde tot het schrijven van deze liederen waarbij de Maagd Maria in ieder lied voorkomt. De teksten zijn in het gallisch-portugees, destijds de taal aan het hof en integreren Maria in het dagelijkse leven. Deze koninklijke muziek heeft hoewel eeuwen oud nog niets aan impact verlopen. Dit wordt uiteraard door de grote kwaliteit van de ensembles waarbij met veel eerbied en passie wordt gezongen en gespeeld. Natuurlijk is de uitgave in de bekende Alia Vox uitvoering met de teksten en toelichting in diverse talen.

The 'Cantigas de Santa Maria' (Canticles of Holy Mary) are 420 poems with musical notation, written during the reign of Alfonso X The Wise (1221–1284) and often attributed to him. It is one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle Ages and is characterised by the mention of the Virgin Mary in every song.
The reissue in remastered multichannel sound of this 1993 landmark recording enables us to hear Jordi Savall and his ensembles at their best. Instrumental and vocal pieces alternate and paint a vivid picture of a repertoire, that contributed much to the birth of Western music.
