Recensie

Het is zeker dat Purcells meesterwerk Dido & Aeneas uitgevoerd is op een meisjesschool in 1689. Recent onderzoek maakt ook zeer aannemelijk dat dit een aangepaste versie betrof met een kalere orkestratie dan de versie bedoeld voor het hof. Op deze opname proberen Steven Devine en Elizabeth Kenny recht te doen aan beide versies, daartoe geïnspireerd door uitvoeringen waarin Sarah Connolly de hoofdrol op zich nam. We horen dus het koor en Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment én op de plaats van de improvisaties delen uit andere werken van Purcell. Hoewel koor, orkest en andere solisten zonder uitzondering uitmuntende prestaties neerzetten, laat initiatiefneemster Sarah Connolly de meeste indruk achter. Een welkome aanvulling.
