Recensie

Mid-City Island was recorded in 2014 and is the first project Moses Sumney has ever released. Moses recorded the entire EP in his apartment in Mid-City, Los Angeles, straight to cassette using a four-track recorder loaned to him by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio.

On the occasion of Mid-City Island's 10th anniversary, Moses kept a promise he had made to himself all those years ago when he was broke and at the very beginning of his career - that he would press it to vinyl in a decade. Looking back on that time, Moses says, "Mid-City, Los Angeles was more of a concept than a place. Seemingly no one had ever heard of it, and yet it was the geographic center of the city. Living there felt like an 'aspirational' Angeleno - very visible and invisible at the same time. I sat on my bedroom floor and wrote 'Plastic' Throughout his ten-year career, Moses Sumney has defied definition: technicolored homemade videos and monochromatic clothing; art rock and black classical; attending fashion weeks from a small town in North Carolina; seemingly endless collaborators, but one overwhelming voice.

His assertion that the indefinable still exists and that dwelling in it is an act of resistance runs like a thread through the world of music, fashion and film.
