Recensie

The original 45 is nearly impossible to find, but this mid-60's dance-floor belter by garage-punk band THE SAVAGES is finally available on single again for the first time since 1965! On the flip-side we serve you the haunting original track by THE YOU KNOW WHO GROUP.

THE SAVAGES were active as a group in Bermuda in the mid-60's, sometimes playing three gigs a day at hotels to entertain the vacationing Americans. Their most well known track is the snarly and dissonant live recorded track "The World Ain't Round, It's Square" from 1966. For their first single they went to New York in 1965 to record their version of "Roses Are Red My Love", a minor U.S. radio-hit originally by THE YOU KNOW WHO GROUP. Living up to their name, THE SAVAGES tear the original to pieces with a stompin' beat, drivin' bass-line, fuzz-guitars and blood-curling screams!

THE YOU KNOW WHO GROUP on the other hand are a mysterious bunch from the New York area. They recorded and released the original "Roses Are Red My Love" in 1964. Masterminded by Bob Gallo, an established rhythm 'n blues producer, the group only appeared with their faces masked on photos and live on stage. They even adopted English accents to cash in on the British Invasion sound that was starting to conquer the world. Mix this with the slightly off-key harmonica throughout the song and we've got ourselves a bonafide weirdo ballad on our hands!
