Op 20 augustus 1972 was het Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum de plek waar Wattstax werd gehouden, een benefietevenement naar aanleiding van de rellen die zeven jaar eerder in de wijk Watts in Los Angeles hadden plaatsgevonden. Met liveoptredens van de meest succesvolle artiesten van platenlabel Stax op dat moment, zoals Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, Rufus & Carla Thomas, Albert King en The Staple Singers. Na eerdere heruitgaven in 2004 en 2007 is Wattstax 50th Anniversary de meest uitgebreide release: het volledige concert verspreid over zes cd’s, inclusief tien niet eerder uitgebrachte nummers, plus een tachtig pagina’s tellend boekwerk met gedetailleerde informatie en sfeervolle full colour foto’s. Een mooi vormgegeven boxset die je mee terug in de tijd neemt naar het evenement dat vanwege de line-up van bands en artiesten als het ‘zwarte Woodstock’ bekend staat. Maar daarmee wordt je Wattstax tekortgedaan. Het was méér: een liveregistratie tijdens de hoogtijdagen van de ‘Black Is Beautiful’-beweging. En bovenal een viering van de zwarte gemeenschap na de turbulente en gewelddadige periode in het voorgaande decennium.
