Hoewel John Mellencamp eerder al succesvol was met American Fool (1982) en Uh-Huh (1983), was het in 1985 verschenen Scarecrow het album waarmee hij het meest succesvol was in de Amerikaanse hitlijst. Met maar liefst drie top tien-hits: Small Town, Lonely Ol’ Night en R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. (A Salute to ‘60s Rock). De deluxe heruitgave van Scarecrow bevat een tweede disc met interessant bonusmateriaal, waaronder een aantal demo’s en Under The Boardwalk, dat in 1986 als B-kant van R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. verscheen en nu voor het eerst op een album is uitgebracht.
