Hoewel John Mellencamp eerder al succesvol was met American Fool (1982) en Uh-Huh (1983), was het in 1985 verschenen Scarecrow het album waarmee hij het meest succesvol was in de Amerikaanse hitlijst. Met maar liefst drie top tien-hits: Small Town, Lonely Ol’ Night en R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. (A Salute to ‘60s Rock).
