Deze dubbel-cd is het resultaat van een ambitieus project: een totaaloverzicht van de geschiedenis van de Amerikaanse Black Roots muziek. Oude jazz en blues, cajun, gospel, New Orleans muziek en nog veel meer stijlen, die aan de basis staan van hedendaagse muziekstijlen als R&B en hiphop. Naast grote namen als John Lee Hooper en de Staple SIngers, komen er ook veel minder bekende muzikanten voorbij en krijgen we zelfs enkele niet eerder uitgebrachte liedjes te horen. Het boekje biedt veel informatie over de afzonderlijke tracks en bevat essays van Corey Harris en Dom Flemons (ook te horen op de cd), waarin aandacht voor de Afrikaanse roots van deze muziek. Het is een geslaagd eerbetoon aan de rijke Black Roots muziek, waarbij vooral opvalt hoe enorm veel muziekstijlen er de afgelopen honderd jaar zijn gecreëerd, en hoe groot de invloed van de zwarte muziek was op andere stijlen, als country, jazz en rock-’n-roll.
