Pinegrove bracht in 2016 ‘Cardinal’ uit, daarmee braken ze op brede schaal door. In 2017 zonderde Pinegrove zich af om onder do-it-yourself omstandigheden ‘Skylight’ te maken. Het is een plaat over happiness, over uitvogelen hoe je optimistisch kunt blijven zonder de realiteit uit het oog te verliezen. Dan moet je met duisternis en teleurstelling om kunnen gaan. Bij Pinegrove betekent dat klassieke Amerikaanse melodieën, directe emotionele teksten en naadloze alt-country. En ondertussen probeert Pinegrove altijd binnen de belijning van de popmuziek te blijven, behalve als het niet goed past, dan komt hun eigenheid pas echt tot z’n recht.
