Deze twee albums verschenen in 1967 in plaats van het beoogde Smile. Smiley Smile heeft nog een paar tracks van dat album in een nieuwe versie, maar klinkt totaal anders dan Brian Wilson in zijn hoofd had. Ook op Wild Honey valt het spaarzame geluid op en beide albums waren geen succes. Pas later werden ze op hun waarde geschat en vooral Wild Honey, waar broer Carl het roer in handen neemt, is een prima plaat met de hit Darlin’. Brian zal zich als componist na deze twee platen vrijwel helemaal terugtrekken tot 1977.
