Tijdens zijn bezoek aan het Hof van Frederik de Grote vraagt Bach om een muziekthema aan de Koning van Pruisen, die niet van voorgestudeerde variaties houdt. Bij thuiskomst schrijft Bach op dit thema zijn Musikalisches Opfer, die hij aan de Prins opdraagt. Bijzonder is dat Bach zelf de uitgave financiert. Onduidelijk is of Frederik de Grote deze ricercari, triosonate en tien canons (die met hetzelfde thema zijn verbonden) heeft gehoord. Het Ricercar Consort geeft een zinderende uitvoering van deze werken, die voor met name wetenschappers nog steeds mystieke kanten herbergt. Meer daarover wordt in het begeleidende boekje toegelicht.
Bach: Musical Offering

On this disc, Philippe Pierlot and the Ricercar Consort perform Bach's Musical Offering, a collection of canons, fugues and other works based on a single musical theme given to him by Frederick the Great of Prussia. The work has its roots in a meeting between Bach and the King in 1747. Well known for his skill at improvising, Bach was asked to play a fugue based on the King's complex theme. Two months after the meeting, Bach published this set of pieces, all based on the King's theme.
