Sam Cooke’s overgang van religieus naar seculier materiaal luidde de geboorte van de soul in, en toen hij zelf SAR Records begon, waren zowel gospel als soul welkom. Dat eerste genre werd uiteraard vertegenwoordigd door Cooke’s eigen oude makkers van The Soul Stirrers, nu met latere Stax ster Johnnie Taylor als lead vocalist. 2 CD’s met de beste soul-gospel die er is, wie hiervoor niet op z’n knieën gaat is voorgoed verloren.
