Recensie

Twenty-two-year-old Lola Young has one of those voices. Suitable for both smoky, dark clubs and silenced arenas, she has a depth, rawness and huskiness that silences crowds.

While Lola questioned her life with honesty on previous releases, "My Mind Wanders And Sometimes Leaves Completely" is a new era for the young singer-songwriter. Love is a subject she will always revisit in her music, she says it's the most relatable subject, isn't it... but on this project, she's stepped completely out of her comfort zone and put her writing skills to the test, tackling new subjects as she explores new depths of her creativity.

On "My Mind Wanders And Sometimes Leaves Completely," Lola takes as her starting point the idea that no one is two-dimensional or perfect. Armed with her voice that shifts between soft and strong in the blink of an eye, Lola uses a folk style to give listeners a glimpse into her life. It's my journey of being a woman and finding out who I am," she says. 'There are a lot of references to people telling me I'm not going to make it [in the music industry]. It's almost like I'm talking to myself and addressing the difficulties you go through growing up and your own insecurities.

The song covers topics such as love bombing, gaslighting, body image and depression, and is a relatable listen for any young person growing up today. It's peppered with descriptive details, such as her ex buying her a record for her birthday ("Don't even listen to punk, do you know me?" she sings on "Semantic Situation"), and someone saying she needed to read a book called "How To Be Happy" and I think it was a little raunchy ("Revolve Around You").
