Van alle alter ego’s die David Bowie in zijn carrière heeft laten zien, spreekt Ziggy Stardust het meest tot de verbeelding: het personage van de androgyne rockster uit een andere wereld die naar aarde is gekomen om een boodschap van hoop te delen in tijden van nood. Een tijdloze boodschap die ook vandaag de dag nog actueel is... In deze gedaante maakte Bowie furore, met als hoogtepunt het in 1972 verschenen album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Totdat de zanger tijdens een optreden in de Londense Hammersmith Odeon op 3 juli 1973, tot verrassing van het aanwezige publiek, onverwacht afscheid nam van Ziggy Stardust: “Of all the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest, because not only is it the last show of the tour but this is the last show that we’ll ever do. Thank you.” Een aankondiging die toepasselijk werd gevolgd door het nummer Rock ’n Roll Suicide. Hoewel opnames van dit memorabele optreden door de jaren heen door verschillende labels zijn uitgebracht, zijn deze nu voor het eerst volledig geremasterd, inclusief de twee nummers – The Jean Genie/Love Me Do en Round And Round – waar Jeff Beck op te horen is. En dan is er ook nog een opgepoetste 4K-versie van het concert, dat in duizend bioscopen wereldwijd wordt vertoond. Kortom, een memorabel afscheid in beeld en geluid van hét alter ego van het Britse popicoon.
