El Camino werd in 2011 vrij snel na het vorige album brothers uitgebracht. Dat album had The Black Keys voorgoed gekatapulteerd van de marge naar het hoofdpodium van de hedendaagse hitlijsten. Daarbij waren ze trouw gebleven aan hun originele lo-fi blues idealen, overigens zonder dat ze daarbij artistiek stil stonden. El Camino ging op dezelfde weg verder en met Lonely Boy en Gold On The Ceiling manifesteerden ze zich ook opnieuw in het commerciële speelveld, terwijl een nummer als Little Black Submarines ook nog eens snoeihard teruggreep op hun roots. Reden genoeg om na de jubileum editie van Brothers ook El Camino nog eens te laten horen. Dit keer voorzien van een concertopname uit die tijd, waaruit al blijkt dat het materiaal ook in grote venues uitstekend tot zijn recht komt. Op de superdeluxe editie (5LP/4CD) ook nog twee radiosessies uit dezelfde periode. Bij die laatste ook nog een speciale Black Keys auto geurverfrisser, perfect om in je El Camino te hangen als je de horizon tegemoet scheurt met deze muziek op de speakers.
