Een eerste beluistering zal ronduit schokkend zijn voor wie Bachs Brandenburgse concerten vooral kent in handen van het moderne symfonieorkest. Niet alleen kiezen John Butt en zijn Dunedin Consort voor de kleinst denkbare bezetting, maar de gebruikte instrumenten zijn ook een volle noot lager gestemd dan we gewend zijn in de vele opnames van deze concerten. Vooral het zesde concert krijgt zo een totaal andere klankkleur en door het geringe aantal muzikanten (met een glansrol voor de Nederlandse violiste Cecilia Bernardini) is elke partij glashelder. John Butt baseert zijn keuze op uitvoerig bronnenonderzoek en het resultaat is, niet in de laatste plaats door de aangenaam ruimtelijke opname, ronduit adembenemend.
